Transkei Traverse: Gcaleka Coast (South): 2 – 8 September 2017
Gcaleka KaPhalo was king of the AmaXhosa over three hundred years ago, ruling over a substantial territory between the Great Kei and Mzimvubu Rivers, between the coastal plain and the escarpment demarcating the Lesotho border in the west. Peri-urban development and unsustainable farming practice have left scars on the hinterland, but much of the coastline remains relatively undeveloped, retaining a magnificence King Gcaleka would have admired.
In September we will be experiencing the beauty of the coastal landscape the world knows as the Wild Coast, running pristine beaches, traversing rocky headlands, enjoying spectacular views from weather-beaten cliff tops and covering a comfortable 100km in 5 days.
This running holiday of a lifetime will see you return home stress free, physically strong and mentally restored. We will run from early morning each day, not racing, but simply enjoying the beauty of the journey, stopping regularly to explore rock pools, discover beach shells and fossils, photograph the rich beauty or pause to swim in rivers or the breakers. Arriving at our overnight accommodation around midday, there will be time to shower before a light lunch, while the afternoons offers options to further explore parts of this unique countryside, engaging in activities such as birdwatching or kayaking, or simply relaxing and enjoying a massage before sundowners and the evening meal.
We start our run from the Haven Hotel at Mbashe River on the morning of 3 September 2017 and arrive at Crawford’s Beach Lodge at Cintsa, just outside East London, early in the afternoon of 7 September. The self-supported nature of the run provides a perfect opportunity to experience a clutter-free holiday, with the ample provisions of the well-equipped overnight lodges and hotels compensating for any overnight “deprivations” through running light.
If you’ve never been there, you won’t want to miss this opportunity. If you have, you may not be able to resist the call to return.
